Safety first
Your Safety Online
If someone may be monitoring your phone or computer, a few precautions can help protect you.
The Exit Site button
The red Exit Site button in the corner of every page leaves this website immediately — it opens a neutral site and replaces this page in your browser history so the Back button won't return here. You can also press the Esc key twice at any time.
Browsing more safely
- Use a safer device if you can. A work computer, a public library computer, or a trusted friend's phone can't be monitored by someone with access to your own device.
- Private or incognito browsing helps — but isn't perfect. It keeps pages out of your browser history, but it can't hide your activity from monitoring software already installed on the device.
- Clear your history if you're able. Most browsers let you clear recent history under Settings → Privacy. Clearing only the last hour can be less noticeable than erasing everything.
- Be careful with email and texts. If your accounts may be shared or watched, don't use them to reach out. Calling from a safer phone is often the most private option.
- Trust your instincts. If you think your activity is being watched, it may be safer to call than to browse.
